One of the more frustrating issues residents must deal with is the very short time frame you have to appeal your assessment. Some states like Illinois give you a short 30 days to decide to appeal. Other states like Wisconsin give you 60 days from the notice date. What does this mean? If your assessment changes, you will receive a notice that states the amount of change. From this publication date, you have a set amount of time to appeal to the proper authority. You have the right to contact your assessor and ask for appeal dates. In the event you didn’t have any change in assessed value, you still have the right to appeal. You will not receive any notification informing you of the deadline for appeal. Many assessors have an online portal to check dates but don’t worry you can call the assessor anytime during the year to find assessment appeal deadlines for your area. Some areas are as early as February but the majority of appeals take place after June 1st.
